Westwood College Student Honored by Los Angeles City Council

(Los Angeles, California) - Westwood College South Bay Design student and campus receive Certificates of Recognition from the Los Angeles City Council for designing a community monument.

Recently, a Westwood College South Bay design student and campus department was honored by the Los Angeles City Council when they helped the Harbor Gateway Neighborhood Council create a community monument to honor the men and women of the Harbor Gateway community who have served in the Armed Forces. The completed monument consists of a tribute board that bears the names, rank and military branch of each community member who once was or is currently in the service.

Westwood College South Bay became involved in the community project after Harbor Gateway Neighborhood Council President, Mary Ann Cyphers, attended the Westwood College's grand re-opening event, and thought it might be a great volunteer project for one of the design students. "Westwood College came to the Harbor Gateway South Neighborhood several years ago, and until this year, all we knew was that it was located here," reflects Ms. Cyphers. "However, we soon learned Westwood College was not just another school. I called the school and asked if they would be able to design a tribute that could be made into a permanent monument, and the school's response, without hesitation was 'Yes, we can' and they did."

Pamela Panopio of the Westwood College South Bay Career Development Services Department opened the project to all students, with graphic design student, Dorothea Hagans, stepping forward to accept the opportunity. After much hard work and dedication, Dorothea produced a design that the Harbor Gateway Neighborhood Council was extremely proud of.

At the unveiling Dorothea, Pamela and Westwood College were presented with Certificates of Recognition by Los Angeles City Councilwoman, Janice Hahn. This project is the perfect example of Westwood College's commitment to continually offering opportunities for their students to advance their career options upon graduation. This project now enables Dorothea to add designing a City of Los Angelos Project to her portfolio and opens the door for future design opportunities.
