Westwood College Celebrates New Campus in South Bay Area

Student demand, need for trained workers leads to new, expanded campus

Feb. 27, 2006 (Torrance, Calif.) - Increasing enrollment, plus expected steady employment growth in California and a need for more trained employees, prompted Westwood College to open a new, expanded campus in California's South Bay area. To celebrate, the community is invited to a variety of grand opening events at the new campus, located at 19700 S. Vermont Ave., Torrance, on Thursday, March 2.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

At 10 a.m. on March 2, business and community leaders will be on hand to welcome the new Westwood College campus and talk about the role of education in creating strong quality of life and economic vitality. Morning activities will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, music, refreshments and campus tours. The festivities will also include a tip of the hat to the late author Dr. Seuss, who was born on March 2, and a book presentation in honor of the National Read Across America program currently being celebrated across the country.

Campus Party

From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the festivities will continue with a campus party featuring food, music, trivia contests, giveaways, campus tours and a visit from the radio station FM 100.3 (The Beat) van. People interested in learning more about Westwood College are welcome to drop by the party, where they can meet students, faculty and staff, and get a firsthand look at classrooms and student work.

Relevant, Career-Focused Education

According to the 2006-7 Economic Forecast and Industry Outlook released this month by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., California's nonfarm employment is expected to grow 1.5 percent this year, with an expected 2.4 percent increase in the state's total civilian employment.

Positions in computer systems and law enforcement related occupations are among those expected to grow the fastest between 2002 and 2012 in California, according to the California Occupational Guide compiled by the Employment Development Department of the State of California. Programs related to these careers are among those offered at the new Westwood College campus.

"Westwood College is dedicated to providing industry-relevant, career-focused education that translates into employees who can make positive contributions in the workplace," said Vicki Bowles, Executive Director of the new Westwood College campus in the South Bay area. "Our move to a new, expanded campus means we're able to work with more students and businesses in the South Bay area, and that helps strengthen our commitment to the communities we serve."
